Day 1: Greetings from the Mother Road

In 2018, my friend Cheryl and I turned 66 within a month of one another, and I suggested that we travel Rte. 66 in honor of the number of years we’ve graced this world. Then, our mutual friend Cathay turned 66 several months later, and while we were celebrating her birthday, she said (without any knowledge of our planned trip) that her motto for the year was going to be “I’m going to get my kicks while I’m 66.” Cheryl and I knew right then that Cathay would be our fellow traveler, and our plans began in earnest. Never mind that Cheryl and I each turned another year older before our plans were complete; the Mother Road still beckoned, and our departure date was set for the last day of September, 2019.

And so today, our adventure began.

Leaving from Lawrence, Kansas, this morning, we drove to Galena to pick up Rte. 66 and from there drove to our destination of Clinton, Oklahoma.
