Day 2: From Clinton, OK to Tucumcari, NM

You may have heard, as I did, that most of the original Rte. 66 no longer exists; or perhaps you looked for it on a map, but found yourself on I-40 instead. However, because Cheryl is a navigating guru, we spent most of our travel time today on the real, honest-to-goodness Rte. 66. With the help of the Moon Route 66 Road Trip travel guide by Jessica Dunham, Cheryl discovered that the original road runs parallel to I-40 as a frontage road. This is a narrow, rough road that sometimes ends abruptly, forcing it’s travelers to take an alternate route, before picking it back up a few miles later. This may all seem like an inconvenience, not worth the trouble, but don’t believe that for one minute. As we travelled the authentic Mother Road through Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico today, we felt the true spirit of the road. We were taken back in time to an America of the early- to mid-1900’s, some of it remarkably intact and beautiful such as the Art-Deco styled U-Drop Inn in Shamrock Texas, while other places were nothing more than ghost towns with derelict buildings and faded signs, the remains of places and times gone by.
