The people you meet along the way, whether they’re fellow travelers or locals make the journey unforgettable.

The first day of our trip while we were in Galina, Kansas, we stopped at “Cars on the the Road” diner  for a photo op with the truck that became the inspiration for “Mater” in the movie Cars, we met a young couple from Spain, Kristina and Christian. Fortunately, we could communicate with them through Cheryl who speaks Spanish. Like us, they’re traveling Rte. 66 to California. We parted saying we hoped we’d meet up again on the road.

The next day we stopped in Shamrock, Texas, to see the U-Drop In Conoco station, and there were Kristina and Christian who seemed as delighted to see us as we were to see them. This time Kristina gave Cheryl her email address, so maybe we can communicate with them and see them again.

In Cathay’s last blog post, she wrote a wonderful story about our visit with Masel, the owner of Tumbleweed Grill in Texola, Oklahoma. I was particularly impressed with her artwork, some of which were displayed on her walls. One painting of a Young Native American man was hauntingly beautiful. His eyes captured the pride and pain of his people. Unfortunately, it was in a dark hall and I didn’t get a photo of it. Another painting I fell in love was a portrait of an elderly woman petting a cat. It reminded me of Andrew Wyeth’s art.
