You learn a lot about yourself, your friends, and your friendships when you set out on an adventure like "Let's get our kicks on Route 66".
First of all Destiny, Cathay, and Cheryl...now why do we need new names? Not sure but it seems to make us all happy as we start our adventure. Besides "fake" is in now, right?
We soon learn pit stops are important, having a reliable navigator is important, singing along is important, and remembering with friends you don't always have to say "sorry" is important.
We learn having a few rules is helpful:
Rule #1. The driver picks the music.
Rule #2. The driver keeps track of the keys.
Rule #3. Arguments are settled with rock, paper, scissors
Rule #4. No more than 10 minutes in the bathroom.
Rule #5. If you anticipate a longer stay, alert the others so they can make other plans.
Rule #6. Carry your own stuff.
Rule #7. No one is always right (except maybe Cheryl).
Rule #8. TBD
Then we learn that adventures are always sprinkled with doses of reality:
- As we happily travel down Ribbon Road smack dap in the middle of nowhere, we ask ourselves "did we put ice in the cooler?"
- As we settle in for a good night's sleep in our Clinton airbnb, we soon find ourselves staring at the ceiling fan as everyone does their share of snorting and snoring. You must clean your nose thoroughly in order for that nose strip to say on all night!
- As we search Tucumcari for the James Dean mural, we also find ourselves in a parking lot searching for a lost credit card.
- As we stop for lunch before a walk through Pecos Historic Park, we curse the friend who left the mustard back at the Blue Swallow (was that Cheryl?).
- And for me after becoming immersed in the wonderful, quirky world of Georgia O'Keeffe in Santa Fe, I found myself contemplating taking out a home equity loan in order to buy a pair of Lucchese boots in one of the shops on the plaza.
- And finally as I enjoy the crisp air, blue skies and creative energy of Santa Fe, I'm struggling to get all my dirty clothes packed back in with all of my clean clothes!
- PS-I think I'm missing a pair of underwear (that's important on a two week adventure)😁

Great post. Your humor is infectious and honest as usual. Love it!
